Distribution

A freshwater fish that naturally inhabits rivers, streams, brooks, floodplains, canals, and ditches in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Panama. These waters are characterized by slow or moderate currents.

Physical Appearance

Knife fish are characterized by a laterally flattened body of a beige-yellowish color, with a blue, opalescent sheen on the sides. They have two rows of scales that form a distinctive sharp edge between the base of the anal and caudal fin (hence the species' name). The female is slightly larger and thicker, while the male possesses a gonopodium - a copulatory organ.

Disposition

Knife fish are active and somewhat aggressive towards their own kind, especially during the breeding season. They form loose groups. The fish are adapted to feed on the surface of the water. This species is flexible and strong, making it a recommended choice for beginning aquarists.

Aquarium

The aquarium should include numerous hiding spots among twisted roots, rocks, and abundant vegetation. Open spaces for free swimming and floating vegetation are essential. Regular water replacement and effective filtration are necessary.

Reproduction

Live-bearing fish that reproduce in general aquariums without much trouble. Fertilization is internal. The gestation period lasts about 3-4 weeks. From a single litter, the female gives birth to 10-40 offspring, which immediately start looking for food. The fry should be transferred to a separate tank. The female is ready for the next breeding after 3-4 weeks.
