Location

This freshwater fish lives in tributaries of Congo River in Zaire and Cameroon. It prefers to live in large groups.

Body description

Colour of the body is white-gray-beige with large dark spots. There are very small, dark dots on the head of the fish. The caudal, dorsal, anal and pelvic fins have a diagonal, dark stripes. The first ray of the dorsal fin is elongated and black. The fish has forked tail, 3 pairs of barbels, and wide fat fin. Male is smaller and darker than female. His genital papilla is pointed.

Temperament and behaviour

This species is very shy. It mostly stays hidden somewhere in the aquarium. It is active at night when you should feed them. This fish can eat smaller fish but it only does if it is improperly fed. It likes company of clown loaches and African cichlids. This fish prefers to swim at the bottom part of the aquarium.

Aquarium decoration

The fish like spacious tanks with a lot of hiding-places, plants, floating plants and sandy substrate.

Breeding

This is an oviparous species. We don’t have any information about breeding these fish in aquarium. They become sexually mature after few years. This is imported fish.
