Breeding Spotted Blue Eye (Pseudomugil Gertrudae) In The Aquarium

Location

This freshwater species lives in tropical streams, swamps, floodplains and puddles with muddy or sandy bottom in Australia and Oceania.

Body description

There are white, blue and yellow variants of this fish. The most popular is the yellow version of the fish. This species has blue iris of the eye, dark and horizontal stripe on the sides, impressive fins. Male has elongated dorsal and pelvic fins. The first rays of these fins are spiny rays. The pectoral fins are placed high and they are directed upwards. They look like wings when the fish swims. The fish has 2 dorsal fins. All fins have small, dark dots. Female is smaller, less colourful than male. Her fins are small, without elongation.

Temperament and behaviour

This is shoal species. Fish prefers to live in a group of 10 minimum and you should keep more females than males. This is peaceful and very active fish. It swims in all water levels. You must cover the tank so your fish do not jump out .

Aquarium decoration

This species prefers a spacious tanks. This aquarium should include a lot of plants, floating plants, roots, space to swim, dark substrate, gentle filtration system, dimmed light. This species is sensitive to chemicals, especially accumulation of nitrates. A partial water exchange should be done regularly.

Breeding

This is an oviparous species. You can breed it in the general tank. Males spread their fins and chase females all the time during the spawning season. They entice females to previously selected hideout (usually it is moss or other plant at the bottom) where female lays eggs. The eggs hatch after 10-14 days. It depends on the water temperature, the higher water temperature the faster the eggs hatch. The parents do not eat the young.
