Location

This species comes from South America but at the moment it can be found worldwide. It lives in freshwater and brackish, standing and reservoirs with flowing water.

Body description

Colour of the female's body is different from male's. Colour of the male is green-yellow with lot of a multi color spots which create an interesting patterns. He has a rotund the bell and elongated, flowing fins. Males are smaller than females. There is also a lot of variants of this fish which differ in colors and shape of the caudal fin.

Temperament and behaviour

This is quiet, friendly and peaceful fish. This species prefers to live in pairs. These fish are recommended for beginner aquarists. They are omnivorous but they don't like a monotonous diet. They prefer to eat inter alia mosquito larvae, algae, blanched lettuce, spinach and plankton.

Aquarium decoration

These fish have fast metabolism, so you need an effective filtration system and the partial water exchanges should be done regularly.

Breeding

This is a live bearer species and it reproduce very easy. The fertilization is internal. The pregnant female can be recognized by a dark pregnant-spot on her belly. The gestation period of the female is 4-8 weeks and it depends on the water temperature. The fry appears in aquarium after this time and it starts feeding immediately. The parents don't care for the offspring. They can even eat their young so you need to separate parents from the offspring.
