Pygmy Sunfish (Elassoma Evergladei)

Location

This freshwater species lives in the forest and swampy reservoirs.

Body description

This is a small species. Body of the fish is laterally compressed. Colour of the body is brown-yellow with dark dots. Colour of the male during the spawning season is blue with black, transverse stripes and female is brown.

Temperament and behaviour

You should keep these fish in a single species aquarium. They are timid and shy in a general tank. Then the fish usually hides between plants and other hideouts. This is active and shoal species. It withstands low water temperature (up to 8°C). You should hibernate these fish.

Aquarium decoration

This species prefers a spacious tank with a lot of plants and hiding-places.

Breeding

This is an oviparous species. The fish spawns in Spring in groups. Female lays eggs among plants. The eggs hatch after 3 days. The fry stars to swim and feed 4 days later. The parents don’t take care for the eggs and offspring.
