Goldfish (Carassius Auratus Auratus)

Location

This species doesn't exist in nature. Wild form of this fish looked very different compared to currently breeding variants.

Body description

Multiple variants of this fish differ in their colours, shape of their body and fins and length of their fins. The most popular variant of this fish in UK is veiltail, comet, oranda, ranchu or telescope eye goldfish. The base colour of the fish is red-gold. There is almost no sexual dimorphism and sex of the fish can only be recognized during the spawning season when male has kind of rash in the form of small, whitish nodules on his gill covers.

Temperament and behaviour

This is peaceful and friendly species. It prefers to live in pairs. This fish can dig in the substrate when it is looking for food. It can also nibble delicate plants. You shouldn't keep these fish with small, very active, aggressive or fins nibbling species.

Aquarium decoration

Goldfish prefers a spacious aquarium which also should include strong light, clean and oxygen-rich water. A partial water exchange should be done regularly. You need an effective filtration system because these fish are voracious and they have fast metabolism.

Breeding

This is an oviparous species. You should breed these fish in small group: single female and two males. The fish spawn in large aquarium with a lot of plants and low water level (about 25 cm). You can stimulate the fish to spawn by abundant and varies feeding. Female spreads eggs among plants or anywhere in the water. The parents don't take careful the roe and fry and they can eat it too. So you should immediately remove parents after spawning. The eggs hatch after 6 days. The fry starts to swim and feed 2 days later.
