Blind Cave Fish (Astyanax Fasciatus Mexicanus)

Location

This species is a variant of Mexican tetra. It lives in standing reservoirs in caves and underground reservoirs in Mexico. These reservoirs are completely dark an have no plants.

Body description

Body of the fish is colourless, nude. The species doesn't have any pigments in its skin. The fish swims in a specific manner.

Temperament and behaviour

The natural habitat of the fish caused the destruction of their eyes through evolution. So the species has heightened other senses like smell, taste, balance (the lateral line) and touch. These fish also are very resistant to irregular supply of the food. They absorb fat. Thanks to that they are able to accumulate up to 4 times more energy comparing to the variants which lives in the surface reservoirs.

Aquarium decoration

This species should be kept in single species aquarium. You should keep small group of the fish. The tank should look like underground cave – it should include gravely substrate, rocks, caves. You don't need any light and plants.

Breeding

This is an oviparous species. The fry hatches a few days after the spawning. The parents don't take care for the fry and may eat them.
