This fish lives in fast-flowing Amazon tributaries in tropical Venezuela, Paraguay and Peru.
This is a big fish which grows very fast. Body of the fish is elongated, tapering rearwards. Shape of the body looks like a knife. Colour of the body is black. There are two, creamy-white halos on the tail and creamy-white stripe on the head. This fish has a specific structure of the body. It's anus is behind the head, the anal fin is very long, undulated and fleshy. The pectoral fins are behind gills cover, the caudal fin is elongated and rounded. The dorsal fin is small and thready. Females are smaller than males.
This fish does not have scales. It is very sensitive to parasites, infections, chemicals. This species has poorly developed eyes and it is sensitive to light. It can see using the electro-reception. The fish moves, to find food and to distinguish their own species by emitting and receiving electrical signals. These senses are induced by receptors located on the body of he fish. This fish should be kept with a big (over 8 cm) and peaceful species. This species usually is active at night. It hides in hiding-places during the day or if you have very bright light. The fish fast accustomed to feeding from the hand of their owner.
This fish needs a very large aquariums which should have a lot of hiding-places among stones, rocks, ceramic pipes which create narrow passages. The aquarium should be decorated with a lot of plants, floating plants, gravely substrate. These fish likes clear water with an effective filtration system and systematic partial water changes.
