Location

This fish lives in streams, lakes, ponds and main riverbeds of Tumbes (Peru) and Esmeraldas (Ecuador) in South America.

Body description

Males grow up to 20 cm in length. Females are smaller and grow up to 15 cm. Colour of the fish is yellow-brown with orange-red border of the dorsal and anal fins. Bottom part of the head is blue. Male has visible hump on the upper part of the head and his fins have sharp tips.

Temperament and behaviour

These are freshwater fish and they swim in near the water surface. They have various temperament - mostly aggressive. They need to have places to hide like many plants or caves.

Aquarium decoration

This species likes spacious tanks with many places to hide: plants, roots, rocks. Fish may dig in the substrate, so all decorative elements should be attached firmly to the bottom. Plants should be properly protected from digging it out eg. planted in pots. Aquarium should be equipped with sandy substrate and good filtration system. The tank must be cleaned regularly - especially bottom part of the aquarium.

Breeding

If you think about breeding this fish then you should do this in a separate tank. There should be flat stones in the tank for female to lay eggs. Substrate should consist of sand or fine gravel.
