Location

This fish lives in freshwater or brackish, standing reservoirs.

Body description

Colour of the body is yellowish-gray. There are dark, transverse stripes on the sides of the fish. All fins are yellow with dark spots. Male is a bit smaller than female. Shape of his body is humped. He has big and rounded dorsal fin. His anal fin is transformed into gonopodium – external copulatory organ.

Temperament and behaviour

This is a shoal, peaceful, quiet, friendly and active species. It prefers to swim at the middle water level. You may keep them in a general tank.

Aquarium decoration

The aquarium should include a lot of plants, space to swim. This species eats algae.

Breeding

This is live-bearer species – fertilization is internal. The pregnant female can be recognized by a dark pregnant-spot on her bell. You should move pregnant female to a separate aquarium. The gestation period of the fish is several weeks. The fry (about 50) appears in the tank every 4-10 weeks after this time. The fry starts to swim and feed straight away. This species is often crossed with other species from the same family.
