Location

This freshwater species lives in rivers and its tributaries in Borneo, Myanmar, Sumatra, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.

Body description

Body of the fish is elongated and cylindrical. Colour of the body is silvery-gray-olive with light under-side. There are rows of round, dark spots on the skin along the lateral line and on the back. This fish has a long mouth and defensive spines under eyes. Female is larger and in the ventral parts thicker than male, but you can recognize sex of the fish when it is sexually matured.

Temperament and behaviour

This fish usually is active at night. It digs in the substrate. It is shy, quiet, peaceful and timid. This fish may become more aggressive and territorial with age towards their own species. This fish is shoal. It prefers to live in groups of minimum 6. It usually swims at the bottom water level and it is bottom feeding species.

Aquarium decoration

This species likes a specious tanks – the longer the aquarium is then better. The aquarium should have a lot of hiding-places among stones, rocks, roots, plants, soft and fine substrate (grain diameter 1-2 mm). Layer of the substrate should be thick and be around 8-10 cm. The fish likes to bury themselves in the substrate. They also filter substrate from food - food goes to the stomach and substrate is expelled through the gills.

Breeding

This is an oviparous fish. It is imported. We don’t have any information about how to successfully breed this fish in the aquarium.
