This freshwater fish lives in a low current tributaries of Amazon River or standing reservoirs with loads of plants in Guiana.
Body of the fish is laterally compressed. Colour of the body is brown-yellow-green. There is a delicate, horizontal, dark stripe on the sides of the fish. This stripe extends to the back. There is also orange-gold, lustrous on the base of the caudal fin. This dot shines like a lantern. Male is smaller and thinner than female. His swim bladder is completely visible.
This is friendly, active and shoal species. It prefers to swim in the middle and upper water levels. The fish likes to hide among the plants or other decorative elements.
The aquarium should include a lot of plants, hiding-places among roots, dark substrate, space to swim and dimmed light.
This is an oviparous species. You should breed these fish in a separate tank. This breeding aquarium should have a bit higher water temperature. Female spreads eggs everywhere. The parents don't take care for the offspring – they can eat the egg and offspring so you should remove the parents after spawning. The eggs hatch after 2 days. The fry starts to swim and feed about 1 week later.
