Breeding Harlequin Rasbora (Rasbora Heteromorpha) In The Aquarium

Location

This freshwater species lives in shallow ditches and puddles in Thailand, Malaysia Peninsular and islands of the Sunda archipelago.

Body description

Body of the fish is laterally compressed. Colour of the body is silvery-red with shine. There is a characteristic, wedge-shaped, black stripe along the lateral line (from the base of the dorsal fin to the base of the tail). This stripe tapers towards the tail. The dorsal and caudal fins are red. Male is thinner than female. His stripe is longer.

Temperament and behaviour

This is shoal, peaceful, friendly species. It prefers to swim by the water-surface.

Aquarium decoration

The aquarium should include floating plants, dimmed light, dark substrate and decorative elements. It should also have space to swim. The tank should be covered because this fish may jump out of the aquarium.

Breeding

This is an oviparous species. Breeding these fish is not easy task. The fish group off into pairs to mate. You should breed these fish in a separate aquarium with very soft water and a bit higher water temperature. Female lays eggs on the underside of the leaves. You should remove parents after the spawning and you should cover the breeding tank. The eggs hatch after 1 day. The fry starts to swim and feed 5 days later.
