Natural habitats this species are muddy coasts of rivers, ponds, lakes, wetlands in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. This is a semi-aquatic plant and it can be up to 1-1.2 meters high in emerged form.
It has rhizome with extensive root system. Rosulate, bottle green, wide, lanceolate leaves on long leaf stems grow from the rhizome. The leaf stems have the same length as leaves. The leaves have clearly visible veins.
This species should be planted in large and high aquarium because it can grow above the water surface, especially in warm and lightsome tank. Then its leaves are smaller and shorter compared to leaf stems. The species should be singly planted in the middle or at the back of the aquarium.
It is hardy and undemanding plant. It doesn't need additional fertilization of the water but substrate should be fertile and thick.
This is spermatophyte species but it blooms only above the water surface. In aquarium we reproduce it vegetatively - by dividing the rhizome.
