This freshwater fish lives in tributaries of lakes or rivers, streams and creeks in Chad, Niger and Sudan.
Colour of the body is gray-brown. There is a lot of dark spots on the body of the fish. The caudal fin is very high. It's first rays are elongated, not connected fully with other rays. It looks like a plume. The fish has a wide and rounded fat fin, forked tail, 3 pairs of barbels. All the fins have dots. These spots may sometimes create a short stripes. The young fish are often confused with a smaller species from the family. The spots create giraffe pattern. Male is smaller than female. His genital papilla is long and pointed.
This is big species, so it is not afraid of other fish. It likes to dominate in aquarium. This fish is active at any time of the day and night. Males are territorial towards each other. Females are aggressive during the spawn season.
This fish prefers spacious tanks with sandy substrate, dimmed light, filtration system with strong flow and a lot of hiding-places among stones, caves etc.
This is an oviparous species. We do not have any information about breeding these fish in aquarium. They become sexually matured after few years. This is imported fish.
