Siamese Algae Eater (Crossocheilus Siamensis)

Location

This freshwater species in lives in fast flowing streams and creeks in Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia.

Body description

Body of the fish is elongated. Colour of the body is silvery-brown. There is a characteristic, horizontal, black stripe spreading from the nostrils to the tail of the fish. These fish have clear fins and 2 pairs of barbels on their chin. Females are a bit thicker than males but difference is practically invisible.

Temperament and behaviour

This is a big, shoal and active fish. You must cover the tank so your fish do not jump out. Older fish can be territorial towards each other and they can harass small and weak species. This fish likes to rests on its fins on the substrate or decorative elements.

Aquarium decoration

This species prefers a large aquarium – longer than higher. Tank should include soft substrate, a lot of plants and decorative elements e.g. roots, round stones etc. These fish feeds on algae – they are very helpful in keeping your aquarium clean from algae. This species prefers to swim in the middle and at the bottom water levels. It prefers clean and rich-oxygen water, too. You need an effective filtration system with fast water flow.

Breeding

This is an oviparous species. We don’t have any information about breeding these fish in aquarium. This fish is imported from their origin.
