Breeding Spotted Talking Catfish (Agamyxis Pectinifrons) In The Aquarium

Location

This freshwater species lives in gentle current tributaries of Amazon Rivers, creeks, standing reservoirs and morasses in Peru, Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador.

Body description

Colour of the body is brown with whitish dots. There are rows of spines above and below the lateral line. The first rays of the pectoral fins are transformed into spines. All fins are dark with light spots. The fish has 3 pairs of barbels on the chin. There is no sexual dimorphism and it is difficult to distinguish the sex.

Temperament and behaviour

This is friendly, sociable species. It is mostly active at night and that is why you should feed them at night. The fish likes to hide in roots, caves or between stones. It likes to dig in the substrate too. These fish can eat small fish and fry. They can make a characteristic sounds (like croak) when they are threatened or when you remove it from the aquarium. This is very hard species. It is bottom feeding fish and it prefers to swim at the bottom water levels. You shouldn’t use the net to catch this fish because it may entangle in the net.

Aquarium decoration

This fish prefers tanks with lot of hiding-places, dimmed light, fine and soft substrate and a lot of plants on the sides of the tank.

Breeding

This is an oviparous species. We don’t have any information about breeding these fish in the aquarium. The fish lay eggs among floating plants in nature.
