Eurasian Watermilfoil (Myriophyllum Spicatum)

This species comes from Europe, north and central Asia and north Africa. This is an aquatic plant. Its natural habitats are muddy bottoms of standing and slow-moving reservoirs around the world at present.

The species has branching stem. Its colour is from green to reddish. Whorled leaves (4 in each node) are arranged in tiers. They are feathery and their colour is from green to reddish too.

This species prefers water with calcium compounds, strong but scattered lighting, substrate with clay or peat. It is sensitive to algae and herbivorous fish. The plant is recommended for breeding aquarium. It is also a great hideout for larvae and young fry. Its feathery leaves secrete a lot of oxygen.

This species should be planted in the middle or at the back of the aquarium in groups. We should systematic cut this plant.

This is spermatophyte species but in aquarium we reproduce it vegetatively – seedlings from cut stems.
