Natural habitats this species are standing and slow-moving reservoirs (ponds, lakes, ditches, rivers, etc.) in Central America and southern North America. It can grow up to several meters high. In aquarium it hight depends on size of the tank but it often grows above the water surface. So we should systematic cut this plant because all emerged leaves are wasted.
This species has long stem with petiolated, feather, pale green, finger-like leaves. These leaves are up to 5 cm long and they are arranged in pairs opposite each other. The root system is poorly developed and it is fine.
This species should be planted in the middle or at the back of the aquarium in loose groups of several pieces. The width of single plant is about 10-12 cm. We can't plant it near the outlet of the filter or pump because a strong current of the water destroys its delicate leaves. The aquarium should have strong light – combination of incandescent fluorescent and solar lighting is the best. We should reduce water temperature up to 18°C and light intensity in the winter. This is favorable for the normal development of the plant.
This is spermatophyte species but it blooms only above the water surface. In aquarium we reproduce it vegetatively – by seedlings from cut stems or by lateral shoots.
