Breeding Dwarf Shrimp (Caridina Breviata) In The Aquarium

Occurrence

A freshwater species, endemic to the Chinese Hailing Island. It was found in a stream high on a cliff, near the village of Zhapo.

Appearance

The shrimp is characterized by a translucent, milky-yellowish body colour with three wide, transverse, black stripes. Additionally, it is spattered all over its body with numerous tiny dots of the same color. Numerous color varieties are available on the market (brown, red, maroon, blue). This species is often confused with others, especially with Caridina venusta. The female is larger, better built and more colourful than the male.

Temperament

Shrimp of this species live in groups. They are quiet and sociable. They can be kept in the same aquarium with other shrimp, snails or even small species of fish.

Aquarium

The aquarium should contain a soft, sandy or gravel subtrate, hiding places among the vegetation (preferred mosses, grasses), roots and stones. A tight cover of the tank is necessary. Prolonged periods of elevated water temperature (above 25ºC) can prove fatal for Caridina breviata shrimp. The species is sensitive to nitrogen compounds.

Reproduction

The shrimp reproduce in fresh and slightly acidic water. The female collects fertilized eggs (about 30 pieces) under her abdomen and keeps them there until hatching for about 3-4 weeks (depending on the water temperature). Fully developed, tiny shrimp hatch from the eggs (no larval stage). This species belongs to the serrata group and can cross with others of the Caridina genus.
