This freshwater species lives in standing reservoirs and rivers with low current in Paraguay.
Colour of the body is olive-silvery. There are two characteristic, transverse, black stripes behind the gill covers. The fish has also dark area around the black anal fin. There is also a long fins variant of this fish breaded in Poland. Body of the fish is laterally compressed. Female is larger and thicker in the ventral parts compared to male. Her caudal fin end is whiter than male's.
This is shoal species – it prefers to live in larger group.
This species prefers a spacious tank. Aquarium should have dark substrate, a lot of plants, hiding-places, floating plants, dimmed light, space to swim. This species tolerates temporary decrease in water temperature.
This is an oviparous species. You should breed these fish in a separate aquarium. Female spreads eggs among plants. You should remove the parents after spawning – they can eat the roe. The eggs hatch after 1 day. The fry starts to swim and feed few days later.
